About The Ponchatoula Quilt Trail

The Ponchatoula Trail is completely located in the south of Tangipahoa Parish. You'll travel through strawberry fields to the Tangipahoa line on the west, through the city of Ponchatoula and south to Manchac and the serene swamp landscape.

The Gardenettes converted the old city swimming pool into a butterfly garden thus the blue diamond. The Louisiana iris is the state flower for Louisiana Garden Club Federation and the red rose signifies the Ponchatoula chapter. The pink rose represents breast cancer awareness & the green, our ever present weeds.


Tangi Turtle

The 16 points represent the 16 varieties of healthy baby turtles shipped to 25 countries worldwide from Tangi Turtle Farm, Inc., an industry leader in the farming and sale of baby turtles. Established in 1953 by Ralph & Hazel Boudreaux, the six scales on the shell are the 60 years that 4th & 5th generations have worked the farm now owned by son Keith.

This block honors the vision of Ohio resident Donna Sue Groves who, in 2001, began the first Quilt Trail. Since then, Trails have spread throughout 46 states and Canada to create what she imagined as a clothesline of quilts, blossoming into the fastest growing grass roots public arts movement in America.
The center pattern is the Snail’s Trail which is painted on Donna Sue’s barn in honor of her mother. The 12 quilt blocks that hang on the businesses, homes and barns on the surrounding clotheslines represent patterns that are dear to Donna Sue’s heart from the Ohio Star to her mother’s favorite pattern: Clay’s Choice.

The red and white represents their professional career with State Farm.

The images highlight the Tarantos’ passions: their 1964 black Thunderbird that was flooded in Hurricane Katrina, their 1976 blue El Dorado Cadillac Convertible and their 1976 red Harley Davidson, two children and four grandchildren. The block also serves as a fitting and poignant tribute to John himself. (1941-2013)


The Cross and Flame

The image of the cross and flame has been a symbol of the Methodist faith for over 200 years. The 12 points on the flames represent the 12 apostles. The liturgical year celebrating the life of Jesus Christ is marked by 7 seasons: Advent-purple/blue/red, Christmastide-white/gold, Epiphany-green, Lent-purple, Eastertide-white/gold, Pentecost-red, Kingdomtide-green.

The artist's heart surrounds her husband's in the center. The small green hearts represent her parents while the two blue hearts are her brother and sister-in-law. The corner dog paws are in memory of her deceased pets.


Mom's Sunbonnet Sue

In the mid 1940’s, the owner’s Granny made a Sunbonnet Sue quilt for her. Fifty years later, her mother unearthed some of her Granny’s extra squares which she made into a new Sunbonnet Sue quilt. While it was being hand quilted, the owner put in enough stitches to have three generations work on the quilt. This quilt square is in memory of her mother with images representing her school teaching (star), her love of flowers (pansy), her commitment to Christ (cross), her patriotism (flag) and her love of life (heart). The purple and red were her mother’s favorite colors.

The catfish and shrimp pinwheel represents the variety of seafood served at the establishment. Many LSU and Saints fans are customers therefore the teams’ colors are represented in the border of the block. Millside was named in honor of the old Cypress Mill that operated for many years (1921-1956) in the nearby area which drew families to settle in this area. History of the mill can be found by Googling “Ponchatoula Cypress Mill”.

Jennifer's father bought the property where the Davis family now lives. The land is filled with pine trees and wisteria bushes. As a child, Jennifer played in the old sharecropper's house that is still on the property today. 


The Class of  '61

The Class of 1961 graduated from Ponchatoula High School, which is now the site of Ponchatoula Junior High. Its stately architecture is a Ponchatoula landmark and is the logical place to locate the class’s gift. The middle block with the green triangles is called “Ocean Waves,” an old and popular quilt block. Ponchatoula High colors are green and white, and the football team is known as the Green Wave. The four stylized buildings around each side of the Ocean Waves block represent the four years we attended high school. The high school is noted for its red brick, multiple floors, and white columns in front. On each side of the brick buildings, there are six green points to symbolize the “6” in “61” and a single leaf to represent the “1” in “61.”

Just like their seafood platter, their quilt design is a combination of Middendorf’s most notable ingredients—catfish, crabs, their iconic building, red and white striped awnings and alligators—all of which also represent the Manchac swamps.

The pattern includes the historic Campbell Building which houses the Jani-King offices as well as retail shops and the corner cafe. Inside each building is a hint of the Jani-King crown in its center. The corner cabins and the fir trees represent the owners’ connection to North Carolina. The middle shapes signify their children and grandchildren.

The images signify Representative Steve Pugh’s connections as a Louisiana Legislator (lattice), his role as Strawberry King (the berries), his family’s floral business (flowers) and his Irish heritage (shamrock). Mrs. Pugh’s Italian heritage and her donation of 500 stuffed artichokes every year is the significance of the artichoke at the bottom of the quilt. Other images include their faith (cross) and their family (the green housing blocks that appear between the flowers).

John Mollere loves old cars and finally bought his dream car, a 1948 Cadillac. He wanted the Cadillac logo on his quilt block, but since logos and words are not allowed, he had to create a block which would only read as “Cadillac” to him. His wife Donna deconstructed the emblem and rearranged it like a puzzle to create a quilt block for his office front. Since he is a State Farm Agent, he used the “State Farm red.”

The cross in the center symbolizes a volunteer fireman on call in the center of the city as the owner of Paul’s Café has been a Ponchatoula Volunteer fireman since 1976, the year he opened the café. The mugs and the strawberries represent the café’s most popular beverages: coffee and homemade strawberry daiquiris. The golden X represents the central location of Paul’s Café at the crossing of Ponchatoula’s main street and the railroad tracks.

Classes on the potter’s wheel take place inside, so the quilt block’s circle represents the wheel, and there are four lidded orange bowls and four tall brown vases to represent the fired clay. This pattern is the first quilt block installed in Louisiana on March 1, 2011.

Fannaly's Auto Graveyard

This site was first used in the 1800's for Campbell Brickyard then in the 1940's for the Braun strawberry farm. The graveyard, created by Marion Fannaly in 1962, contains 150+ antique cars and four registered live oaks.

As a General Practitioner, Dr. Kozel is the center of the health of the entire patient and every member of the patient's family.  The stethoscopes swirl in front of the health of the entire patient and every member of the patient's family.  The stethoscopes swirl in front of the "red" cross, pink being his nurse wife's favorite color.  The border is created not only by the family and the heart monitor, but also by eight reflex testing hammers and two odiscopes.

The Smith family had a produce stand then strawberry plants which evolved into what is today known as Smith's Nursery.  Mrs. Smith has served as the Louisiana Strawberry Festival Queen, while Mr. Smith, whose favorite tree is the palm tree, is a landscaper.

A blend of National & local causes make every Lions Club a brotherhood of unselfish service.  The border, in traditional blue and gold, comprises not only their signature roaring lion and pawprints, but also symbols for the Lions Eye Foundation and the Crippled Children's Camp.  The interior of each block represents the local chapter's homebase.
